IVF procedure. IVF (in vitro fertilisation) is the fertilisation of an egg cell (centre) outside the human body. The technique depicted here is called intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), where a single sperm cell is injected directly into the egg using a micro-needle (right). The fertilised egg is then cultured for a few days before being introduced into the mother's uterus. IVF is used to help infertile couples have children.
